This volume collects ten lectures delivered by the American astronomer Ormsby MacKnight Mitchell during the mid-1800s. At the time this work was first published, Mitchel was director of the Cincinnati Observatory. He later went on to serve as a general in the Civil War, and died in 1862. This copy is most likely published posthumously a few decades after Mitchel's death (no date of publication listed). Mitchel provides a history of ancient and modern astronomy and outlines what was known and believed about the movement of the planets and stars as of the mid 19th century. Condition of this copy is good overall, with some mild cover soil, and owner's label on front inside cover. Inner pages are clean, binding is tight. Measures approx. 6"x9."
